Friday Nov 9th

11.30. a.m. – 12.30. p.m. (approx.) Killarney Library


  • Opening of Hugh O’Flaherty Photo & Memorabilia Exhibition by Cllr. Sean O’Grady Mayor of Killarney (This will remain in place for a week)
  • Award Winner Announcements  & Exhibition of:
  1. Hugh O’Flaherty Painting (Open Competition)
  2. Hugh O’Flaherty 2nd Level Schools Essay
  3. Hugh O’Flaherty Essay on the application of O’Flaherty’s inspirational example to todays world (Open Competition)
  4. Hugh O’Flaherty Poetry (Open Competition).
7.30.p.m. – 8.30.p.m. (approx.) – The Malton Hotel – Lower Lake Room:
  • Official Opening of Memorial Weekend by Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage & Gaeltacht
  • “Some personal memories of my uncle” a talk by (Retired) Justice Hugh O’Flaherty (Nephew of the Monsignor).
  • Musical Memories – A selection of Vera Lynn Songs of the WW2 era performed by Rosin Hussey, Megan Carney and Marie Woulfe (students of Sharon Reidy).                                                                            Note: Admission to the ceremony is free but places will be limited - Enquiries for tickets to Oonagh or Kellie on 064 6637928.
Saturday Morning Nov 10th - O’Flaherty Kerry Trail Tour

09.00. a.m. – 3.40.p.m (approx.)-  Meet at Cathedral Car Park:

Schedule to include:
  • Unveiling of Commemorative Plaque at the Old Monastery on Port Road
  • Visit to the Monsignor’s grave in Cahersiveen
  • Refreshment break in Portmagee
  • Visit to O’Flaherty Memorial Sculptor’s workshop in Knightstown, Valentia Island
  • Refreshments at Muckross House Garden Restaurant
  • Visit to the O’Flaherty Memorial Plantation in the Arboretum at Muckross.
Note: Coach Seats @ €25 each, including refreshments at Portmagee and at Muckross House Restaurant, must be booked in advance on 064 6637928 on or before Thursday November 8th

Children’s Reading Workshop ”Where Dreams Begin" - Killarney Outlet Centre – Attendance is Free but booking will be essential as places will be limited.

  • Readings & Workshop by Children’s Author & Poet, Carmen Cullen.  Carmen is a niece of the iconic Irish traditional singer of the 1940’s & 50’s, Delia Murphy (who was a friend & ally of Monsignor O’Flaherty during WW2 in Rome)
  • Workshop is for Children ages 8  to 11 NB. Please note it is not suitable for younger children. Children should bring a copybook or paper and pen or pencil.
Saturday Night Nov 10th

7.30. p.m. – The Killarney Plaza Hotel – 4th Annual Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award.

  • Reception
  • Premiere of 3rd original short drama on the life of Hugh O’Flaherty
  • Keynote Address – An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD.
  • Award Ceremony Presentation & Address by Mayor Sean O’Grady
  • Address by Award Recipient

Sunday Morning Nov 11th 

10.30.a.m. – St Mary’s Cathedral

The Papal Nuncio Archbishop Brown will celebrate the Annual Hugh O’Flaherty Commemorative Mass.

08.00.a.m to mid-afternoon – Killarney Golf & Fishing Club

The Hugh O’Flaherty Perpetual Cup Golf Competition.
